About This Neighborhood

In the Central Business District or “CBD”, evenings bring crowds to historic Lafayette Square and to the Spanish Plaza at the River Walk for free concerts. The Orpheum, home to the Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra, and numerous smaller theaters and cabarets come to life for nighttime performances.  Best of all, this historic neighborhood has become a hot address for visitors to enjoy access to all the city offers including; The Aquarium of the Americas, The Audubon Institute’s Insectarium, The Southern Food and Beverage Museum, and great shopping at both the Canal Place and the River Walk Galleries. The Warehouse District is home to many art galleries, fine restaurants, and nightlife entertainment.  Many condominium buildings have been transformed from turn-of-the century factories and warehouses into luxurious living loft-like spaces.  With this neighborhood’s proximity to the downtown CBD, uptown shopping and entertainment and easy access to the I-10, this neighborhood is widely sought after by young professionals and second home buyers.

Central City is just a hop skip and jump from downtown New Orleans and offers easy access to the I-10 to boot. It is a section of New Orleans to the west (up river) of the Central Business District and north (lake wards or away from the river as locals say) from the down river section of Uptown. Some locals also call it “The 3rd Ward”, although legally that designation includes a wider area including much of the Central Business District. The area of “Central City” centers around Oretha Castle Haley Boulevard (historically known as Dryades Street) and was a center of African-American commerce and culture in the first half of the 20th century. Today this area is experiencing a renaissance bringing new businesses, restaurants and nightlife offerings to the area.
