About This Neighborhood

The French Quarter, also known as the “Vieux Carré” or “The Quarter” sits on the crescent of the Mississippi River on some of the highest ground in New Orleans. Not only is it the city’s cultural hub, but also a community where residents take time to reminisce with neighbors about times-gone-by, and to welcome visitors in the streets.  French Quarter architecture is a mix of Spanish, French, Creole and American styles. Plastered walls, chimneys and walled courtyards, perfect for French Quarter parties, are a gift of the Spanish influence.  Cast iron balconies were added to many masonry buildings after 1850, when Baroness Pontalba included them on her fashionable row houses near Jackson Square.  These lacy galleries, along with plentiful stoops and porches on younger buildings, make The Quarter a great place for people-watching-and every kind of person imaginable can be spotted on the sidewalks. Besides its obvious architectural distinction, the Vieux Carre offers visitors a plethora of different experiences. Around the bend of every corner you may find eclectic shopping destinations and delicious restaurants.  Browse the treasure trove at the French Market, shade yourself in Jackson Square, and admire the glorious architecture of this historic neighborhood. The Faubourg Marigny is the next neighborhood down river from the French Quarter, just on the other side of Esplanade Avenue. Long a quiet residential neighbor to the celebrated Vieux Carre, this neighborhood has exploded in recent years into a vibrant destination for food, music and good times, with much of this activity concentrated on Frenchmen Street.  Visitors to Frenchmen Street won’t see Mardi Gras beads, frozen daiquiri stands or T-shirt shops; rather, the area very much caters to locals. In fact, New Orleanians who haven’t set foot on Bourbon Street in years spend whole weekends romping around Frenchmen Street, bar-hopping for live music or eating out along its increasingly diverse restaurant row. Branch out off of the beaten path into the ByWater just a bit east (down river) from the French Quarter with a healthy mix of blue collar folks who grew up here, and more recent bohemian arrivals. Artists and musicians relocated here when the French Quarter became too pricy. It is primarily residential but undeniably hip; there are lively pubs, restaurants and randomly placed edgy found-object art scattered throughout the neighborhood. Travelers and residents from other parts of the city are steadily discovering this neighborhood’s old-time, laid-back charm.
