About This Neighborhood

Enjoy walks through any of the parks in the Garden District and you are likely to find locals playing with their dogs or relaxing on the grass. Walk down Magazine Street, the neighborhood’s commercial center, and experience the antique shops, design studios, clothing stores, restaurants, cafes and much more.  Dubbed the “Garden District” this historic New Orleans neighborhood is noted for its elegant homes and gardens and Live Oak trees and extends from Carondelet to Magazine St. toward the river, and the Uptown side of Jackson Avenue heading toward the French Quarter, to the downtown side of Louisiana Avenue as you make your way uptown.

The Irish Channel originated as an ethnic working class neighborhood and has kept up traditions far beyond many other neighborhoods in the city. The neighborhood has many “shot-gun” style homes of all types, including doubles and camel-backs that display a variety of decorative mill work.  Slews of former residents and their descendants come back for the big traditional St. Patrick’s Day events every year, as do many New Orleanians with no connection to the Irish Channel or Ireland.   The boundaries are sometimes debated, but the official Irish Channel Historic District borders are Magazine Street, Delachaise Street, Tchoupitoulas Street, and Jackson Avenue.

The Lower Garden District neighborhood boasts an extensive collection of 19th-century residential and commercial buildings, many pre-dating the Civil War.  What makes this neighborhood specia,l is the abundant canopy of  Live Oak trees and Crepe Myrtles. Lining the streets and yards, these trees define this residential neighborhood whose centerpiece is Coliseum Square where residents can relax and gather in the park and enjoy the grand fountain at its center. The boundaries for this neighborhood are loosely; Magazine St. to Tchoupitoulas heading toward the river, and the Downtown Side of Jackson Avenue to Uptown side of Clio St. heading toward the French Quarter.
